Escape the dust

 A few weeks ago I had a discussion with a fellow movie lover. We somehow got on the topic of 'What is the saddest movie scene ever.' And naturally we both had our opinions. There are so many sad scenes in movies it is hard to pick just one. And I am sure as you read this, you may even think of one you find to be 'the saddest'. But for now, I am just going to share with you what I came up with as 'The Saddest movie scene ever.'  And for my close friends out there, it will come as no surprise that I chose a scene from 'Where the Wild Things Are'. This is a beautiful movie, and is very underrated. I definitely identify with our Child Hero and think that's a big component as to why I love this movie so :-)

The scene is set:



Carol and Max

  After starting a tour of his new kingdom with Carol; The leader of the beasts. Max is led to a desert part of the island. As they trek through the sand, Carol remarks to Max:

Carol: "This part of your kingdom's not so good."
Max: "Why?"
Carol: "Well, look: this used to be all rock, and now it's sand, and then one day it's going to be dust, and then the whole island will be dust, and then... Well I don't even know what comes after dust."

 Carol pauses from his speech. He frowns at the thought of this happening. Max, dwarfed by this gigantic beast, awkwardly breaks the silence.

Max: Carol, did you know the sun was going to die?
(SCENE)

 What makes this scene so sad to me, is that Carol (A character of Max's imagination) senses his own morality and that of his land and friends. Both he and Max have no clue how much they are bound to each other. Outwardly, they are very different. But within each other, they are the same. Carol represents a projection of who Max wants to be, and in a lot of ways is. Big, strong, and for certain situations, scary. Yes there are Two main characters in this story. But only One is the creator. And only One will be eventual executioner.
 As a child, Max's imagination literally runs 'Wild'. But as he grows up, and as with all of us as we grow from child to teenager, and eventually into an adult, we start to lose that amazing thing we call 'Imagination'. What Carol senses, and ultimately Max who in reality senses, is that Something is changing. The landscape of his mind is slowly, but surely altering. Or as Carol would say "And then one day it's all going to be dust."

 And Sadly, for Carol and Max, the dust will come. We all grow up
